Responsibilities

Occupational Therapists treat injured, ill, or disabled patients through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations). They help patients to live life to its fullest by:

  • Promoting health
  • Helping maintain the skills needed for daily life
  • Assisting patients to live better with an amputation or injury.

Occupational Therapists undertake individual evaluations and customised interventions to help patients perform daily activities and reach their rehabilitation goals.

Skills and knowledge

Occupational Therapists at Peke Waihanga are skilled at working within multidisciplinary teams and have excellent communication skills. They have the ability to engage patients with empathy and practice in a culturally safe way. The also have the following skills and knowledge:

  • Strong understanding of biomechanics, anatomy, joint motion, pain management, and safe patient handling.
  • Ability to conduct comprehensive assessments and apply effective clinical reasoning in complex situations.
  • Experience in rehabilitation, with confidence developing evidence informed treatment plans.
  • Competence in clinical documentation.
